It is commonly considered by:

What Is the Spain Non-Lucrative Visa?
The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa is a national residence visa for non-EU nationals who want to live in Spain without performing any employment or professional activity.
Applicants must demonstrate that they can support themselves and their eligible family members without needing to work in Spain.
Spain’s official immigration guidance defines the route as temporary residence for foreign nationals and their families who apply from their country of origin or lawful residence and will live in Spain without carrying out labour or professional activities.
The visa does not require:
-
A Spanish job offer
-
Employer sponsorship
-
A points-based assessment
-
A university qualification
-
A Spanish language test
-
A fixed property investment
-
A business plan
-
A minimum age
However, the applicant must satisfy the financial, insurance, criminal-record, health and residence requirements.
Main Benefits of the Spain Non-Lucrative Visa
The pathway may allow successful applicants to:
-
Reside legally in Spain
-
Include eligible family members
-
Enrol children in school
-
Renew the residence authorisation
-
Build qualifying legal residence toward long-term residence
-
Experience life in Spain without relying on employment
-
Apply for a Spanish Foreigner Identity Card after arrival
The initial residence authorisation is valid for one year from the date of entry into Spain. A successful renewal is normally granted for two years, unless the applicant already qualifies for long-term residence.
Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Financial Requirement
Applicants must demonstrate sufficient resources to support themselves and their accompanying family members without working.
The financial requirement is based on Spain’s Public Multiple Effects Income Indicator, known as IPREM.
For 2026, the IPREM remains:
-
€600 per month
-
€7,200 per year
The principal applicant must demonstrate 400% of the annual IPREM. An additional 100% of the annual IPREM is required for each accompanying family member.
Minimum Funds for the First Year

Applicant, spouse and two children

Add €7,200
Applicant Monthly Income Requirement
Principal applicant
€2,400
Each accompanying family member
€600
These are the statutory minimum figures. Demonstrating funds comfortably above the minimum may be advisable, particularly where:
-
Income fluctuates
-
The applicant relies primarily on savings
-
Several family members are included
-
Currency exchange rates are unstable
-
Housing expenses are substantial
-
The source of funds requires detailed explanation
Important: Meeting the numerical threshold does not automatically guarantee approval. The consular authority may assess the source, ownership, availability, regularity and credibility of the funds.
What Financial Evidence Can Be Used?
Applicants may demonstrate financial capacity through their own legally obtained resources.
Evidence may include:
-
Personal bank statements
-
Bank balance certificates
-
Fixed deposits that are accessible
-
Pension income
-
Retirement benefits
-
Investment income
-
Dividend income
-
Rental income
-
Annuities
-
Trust distributions
-
Securities or investment portfolios
-
Other stable and legally available passive income
Official Spanish guidance permits applicants to demonstrate resources through different forms of evidence, including financial holdings and certified banking documentation. Where funds arise from shares or interests in companies, the applicant may need confirmation that they do not perform work for the company.
Strong Financial Evidence Should Show
-
The applicant owns or legally controls the funds
-
The money is readily available
-
The funds are not borrowed solely for the application
-
The balance has a credible history
-
The source of large deposits can be explained
-
Regular income is supported by contracts, certificates or tax records
-
The applicant can maintain the required resources after relocating
A last-minute unexplained deposit may attract additional scrutiny.
Can You Work Remotely on a Spain Non-Lucrative Visa?
No.
The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa does not authorise:
-
Employment in Spain
-
Employment for a foreign company
-
Self-employment
-
Freelancing
-
Consultancy services
-
Online professional activity
-
Remote work
-
Actively managing a business from Spain
Official Spanish consular guidance expressly states that this visa does not permit professional services or online and remote work.
Applicants intending to continue active remote employment or freelance work should assess the Spain Digital Nomad Visa instead.
Passive ownership of investments or companies is different from actively working, managing daily operations or providing professional services. Applicants with business interests should obtain individual legal and tax advice before relying on the Non-Lucrative Visa.
Selecting the wrong visa category can result in refusal or future compliance problems.
Health Insurance Requirement
Applicants must have public or private health insurance arranged with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain.
The policy should normally provide comprehensive medical coverage comparable to the coverage available under Spain’s public healthcare system.
Depending on the responsible Spanish consular office, the policy may need to:
-
Cover the applicant throughout Spain
-
Remain valid for the required residence period
-
Cover hospitalisation and general medical treatment
-
Avoid significant exclusions
-
Avoid waiting periods
-
Avoid major co-payments or deductibles
-
Include all accompanying family members
Ordinary travel insurance is generally not a suitable replacement for comprehensive Spanish residence health insurance.
Applicants should confirm the exact policy wording accepted by the Spanish embassy or consulate handling their application.
Who Can Be Included?
Eligible family members may apply together with the principal applicant.
This can include:
-
A legally married spouse
-
An eligible unmarried or registered partner
-
Minor children
-
Financially dependent adult children who remain part of the family unit
-
Financially dependent parents or other qualifying ascending relatives
The applicant must demonstrate:
-
The genuine family relationship
-
Financial dependency where applicable
-
That an adult child has not formed an independent family unit
-
That the required additional funds are available
-
Appropriate health insurance for every applicant
An additional €7,200 per year is required for each accompanying family member under the 2026 financial threshold.
General Eligibility Requirements
An applicant must generally:
-
Be a non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss national
-
Apply from outside Spain through the competent Spanish consular authority
-
Not be unlawfully present in Spain
-
Have sufficient financial resources
-
Have compliant health insurance
-
Have no disqualifying criminal record
-
Not represent a threat to public order, security or public health
-
Not be subject to a relevant entry prohibition
-
Hold a passport meeting the applicable validity requirement
-
Obtain the required medical certificate
-
Pay the applicable government fees
-
Intend to reside in Spain without working
Spain’s current rules require criminal-record clearance covering Spain and the countries where the applicant has resided during the previous five years.
Documents Required
The precise checklist depends on the applicant’s nationality, family circumstances and Spanish consular jurisdiction.
Common documents include:
-
National visa application form
-
EX-01 residence application form
-
Recent passport photograph
-
Complete valid passport
-
Proof of legal residence in the consular jurisdiction
-
Personal cover letter
-
Bank statements
-
Bank balance certificate
-
Evidence of pension or passive income
-
Investment or rental-income documents
-
Tax returns or income declarations
-
Private health-insurance certificate
-
Full insurance-policy terms
-
Police-clearance certificates
-
Medical certificate
-
Marriage certificate
-
Birth certificates
-
Evidence of dependency for adult family members
-
Proof of accommodation where requested
-
Proof of payment of visa and residence fees
-
Certified Spanish translations
-
Apostille or consular legalisation where applicable
Official Spanish guidance requires foreign public documents to be legalised or apostilled unless an exemption applies, and documents must generally be translated into Spanish by an accepted translator.
Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Application Process
Step 1: Complete an Eligibility and Financial Assessment
The applicant’s nationality, family size, residence history, passive income, savings and intended relocation plan should be reviewed.
Step 2: Calculate the Required Funds
The calculation should include:
-
€28,800 for the principal applicant
-
€7,200 for each dependent
-
A suitable financial buffer
-
Exchange-rate fluctuations
-
Expected housing and living costs
Step 3: Prepare the Financial Explanation
The application should clearly explain:
-
The source of funds
-
Ownership of the money
-
Income regularity
-
Major deposits
-
Investment income
-
Pension income
-
How the applicant will live without working
Step 4: Arrange Compliant Spanish Health Insurance
The insurance should be obtained from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain and should meet the requirements of the responsible consular office.
Step 5: Obtain Police and Medical Certificates
Documents should be issued within the applicable validity period and completed in the required format.
Step 6: Translate and Legalise Documents
Foreign public documents may require:
-
Apostille
-
Spanish consular legalisation
-
Certified or sworn Spanish translation
Pakistan is not currently treated as a Hague Apostille Convention country for all document-use purposes in the same way as participating states, so the exact legalisation chain should be confirmed for each Pakistani document before filing.
Step 7: Submit the Application
The application is normally submitted personally through the Spanish embassy, consulate or appointed visa service responsible for the applicant’s lawful place of residence.
Pakistan-based applicants should follow the current national-visa procedure published by the Embassy of Spain in Islamabad. The embassy maintains a separate contact channel for national visa enquiries.
Step 8: Receive the Decision and Collect the Visa
The competent residence authority has a formal maximum decision period of one month from receipt of the consular communication. Appointment availability, document review and visa issuance may extend the overall practical timeframe.
Where approved:
-
The applicant generally has one month to collect the visa
-
The applicant must enter Spain within the visa’s validity
-
Entry validity cannot exceed three months
-
The one-year residence period begins on entry into Spain
Step 9: Apply for the Foreigner Identity Card
The applicant must personally apply for the Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, or TIE, within one month after entering Spain.
Spain NLV Renewal Requirements
The initial Non-Lucrative residence authorisation is valid for one year.
A renewal is normally valid for two years.
To renew, the applicant must generally:
-
Continue to have sufficient financial resources
-
Maintain compliant health insurance
-
Continue residing without employment or professional activity
-
Have no disqualifying criminal record
-
Ensure school-age dependent children are enrolled in school
-
Pay the renewal fee
-
Demonstrate real and effective residence in Spain for more than 183 days during the calendar year
The current Spanish immigration regulations expressly require more than 183 days of actual residence in Spain during the calendar year for NLV renewal.
Renewal Financial Planning
Because a standard renewal covers two years, applicants should be prepared to demonstrate sufficient resources for the entire renewal period.
Using the current 2026 IPREM as a planning reference:
Family Composition
Indicative Funds for Two-Year Renewal
Principal applicant
€57,600
Applicant and spouse
€72,000
Applicant, spouse and one child
€86,400
Each additional dependent
Add €14,400
These calculations are planning estimates based on the current monthly IPREM formula and a two-year renewal period. The applicable IPREM and documentary standard must be reconfirmed when the renewal is filed.
A renewal application may generally be submitted:
-
During the two months before expiry; or
-
Within three months after expiry, although late filing may expose the applicant to a sanction.
A timely renewal application extends the validity of the previous authorisation until a decision is made.
Pathway to Long-Term Residence
Legal and continuous residence under the Non-Lucrative route may contribute toward eligibility for Spanish long-term residence.
Long-term residence is generally available after five years of legal and continuous residence in Spain, subject to applicable absence limits and other requirements. It authorises the holder to reside and work in Spain indefinitely under conditions comparable to Spanish nationals.
For continuity purposes, absences should be carefully monitored. Current long-term residence rules generally allow absences of up to six continuous months, provided total absences do not exceed ten months during the five-year period, subject to certain exceptions.
Long-term residence is not automatic. A separate application must be filed and approved.
Does Buying Property Qualify You?
Purchasing property in Spain does not automatically qualify an applicant for the Non-Lucrative Visa.
Property ownership may help demonstrate:
-
Accommodation arrangements
-
Financial stability
-
Connections to Spain
-
Rental income from property outside or inside Spain, where legally documented
However, the applicant must still satisfy all NLV requirements, including sufficient financial resources, health insurance and the prohibition on work.
There is no mandatory property-purchase amount under the Non-Lucrative Visa.
Does the NLV Make You a Spanish Tax Resident?
Visa approval and tax residence are separate legal matters.
An individual may become tax resident in Spain where, among other circumstances:
-
They spend more than 183 days in Spain during a calendar year; or
-
Spain becomes the principal centre of their economic activities or interests.
Because NLV renewal also requires substantial physical residence, applicants should obtain Spanish tax advice regarding:
-
Overseas pension income
-
Rental income
-
Dividends and investments
-
Foreign bank accounts
-
Company ownership
-
Property holdings
-
Wealth reporting
-
Double-taxation arrangements
Superior Consulting does not provide Spanish tax advice unless such advice is separately provided by a suitably qualified professional.
Who Is This Visa Best Suited For?
The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa may be suitable for applicants who:
-
Have stable pension income
-
Have substantial personal savings
-
Receive reliable rental or investment income
-
Do not need to work after relocating
-
Want to spend most of the year in Spain
-
Can obtain compliant private health insurance
-
Want to include eligible family members
-
Are prepared for Spanish tax and residence obligations
Who May Not Be Suitable?
The route may not be appropriate where the applicant:
-
Intends to continue remote employment
-
Plans to freelance or provide consulting services
-
Wants to establish or actively manage a business
-
Has insufficient or recently borrowed funds
-
Cannot document the source of money
-
Intends to spend less than half the year in Spain
-
Cannot obtain acceptable health insurance
-
Wants a job-seeker pathway
-
Relies on future employment in Spain
-
Cannot meet the family financial requirement
A remote employee or freelancer should consider the Spain Digital Nomad Visa rather than presenting active income as passive income.
Common Reasons Spain NLV Applications Fail
-
Insufficient Financial Resources
The applicant must meet the full threshold for themselves and every accompanying dependent.
-
Unexplained Bank Deposits
Large recent transfers without source documents can create credibility concerns.
-
Active Employment or Remote Work
Employment contracts, business activity or online professional work may conflict with the non-lucrative nature of the visa.
-
Inadequate Health Insurance
Travel insurance, reimbursement-only policies or policies with major limitations may not satisfy the requirement.
-
Weak Cover Letter
The application should clearly explain the relocation plan, finances, accommodation and intention not to work.
-
Incorrect Legalisation or Translation
Foreign public documents may be rejected when apostille, legalisation or Spanish translation requirements are not followed.
-
Insufficient Residence Intention
The NLV is a residence pathway, not a method of obtaining a Spanish residence card while primarily living elsewhere.
-
Failure to Plan for Renewal
Applicants should consider the two-year renewal financial requirement and 183-day residence rule before starting.

What is the minimum financial requirement in 2026?
The principal applicant must demonstrate at least €28,800 for the first year. An additional €7,200 is required for each accompanying family member.
How much does a couple need?
A couple requires a statutory minimum of €36,000 for the first year.
How much does a family of four need?
A principal applicant, spouse and two children require a statutory minimum of €50,400 for the first year.
Can I apply from Pakistan?
Yes. An eligible Pakistani national may apply through the Spanish national-visa process applicable to residents of Pakistan.
Can I work remotely?
No. The Non-Lucrative Visa does not authorise remote employment, online work, freelance services or other professional activity.
Can I work for a Spanish employer?
No. The visa is specifically intended for residence without employment or professional activity.
Can I operate my overseas business?
Passive ownership may be different from actively working or managing a business. Applicants who remain operationally involved should obtain legal advice and consider whether the Digital Nomad Visa or another category is more appropriate.
Can I use savings instead of monthly income?
Savings may be used to demonstrate financial capacity, subject to satisfactory evidence of ownership, availability and source. Regular passive income may further strengthen the application.
Can I use rental income?
Documented rental income may form part of the financial evidence. The applicant should provide ownership, tenancy, tax and payment records.
Can I use borrowed money?
Funds should genuinely belong to and remain available to the applicant. Recently borrowed or temporarily transferred money may not demonstrate sustainable financial capacity.
Do I have to buy property in Spain?
No. Property purchase is not mandatory and does not replace the financial or insurance requirements.
Do I need private health insurance?
Applicants must have public or private health coverage from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain. Most applicants applying from abroad rely on compliant private Spanish health insurance.
Can my spouse and children accompany me?
Eligible spouses, partners and dependent children may apply together, provided the relationship, insurance and additional financial requirements are satisfied.
Can my spouse work in Spain?
Family members admitted under the same non-lucrative framework should not assume that they have employment rights. A separate immigration modification or work authorisation may be required.
Is there an age limit?
There is no general minimum retirement age or maximum age. Children and other dependants must meet the applicable family requirements.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
There is no general Spanish-language test for the initial NLV application.
How long is the initial residence valid?
The initial residence authorisation is valid for one year from entry into Spain.
How long is the renewal?
A standard successful renewal is valid for two years.
How many days must I stay in Spain?
For renewal, current rules require real and effective residence in Spain for more than 183 days during the calendar year.
Can the NLV lead to permanent residence?
Legal and continuous residence may contribute toward eligibility for Spanish long-term residence after five years, subject to absence limits and all applicable requirements.
Is the Spain Non-Lucrative Visa the same as the Golden Visa?
No. The NLV is based on sufficient financial resources and residence without working. It does not require a qualifying investment.
Is it the same as the Digital Nomad Visa?
No. The Digital Nomad Visa permits qualifying remote work. The Non-Lucrative Visa does not permit remote or professional work.
Can Superior Consulting guarantee approval?
No. No ethical consultancy can guarantee visa approval. Each application is independently assessed by the competent Spanish authorities.
